10. “Twin hope” by Diana Webman
The hike to the mountain gorillas was particularly arduous that day. ‘Consistent rain made the ground very slippery,’ says Diana, ‘and the hillside was so steep it felt vertical.’ The gorilla group ahead finally settled to feed. ‘What made all the physical effort worth it was to see the mother with her two babies.’ This is only the fifth set of twins ever to be reported in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. The mother was a natural with her six-month-old infants, nursing them while feeding herself. When the silverback leader of the group chased her from a nettle patch, she vocalised at him, loudly, but moved on. ‘In this picture, she is still tense from the encounter’, says Diana, ‘and continues to glance across at him while she eats. Her twins, in the comfort of their mother’s strong arms, appear blissfully ignorant.’ T...

Kay Sun Hotel: African Cuisine in Exotic Setting
15/09/2013
Moses Opobo
Kay Sun Hotel just crept up across the wall from the Urban Boutique Hotel in Kiyovu. The modest single-storey structure in which it is housed has been under construction for the last two or so years, and what we thought would otherwise emerge as a posh residential house instead turned out to be a hotel
Kay Sun is the typical nice, clean and comfy hotel operating out of the city center. The bricks on the walls still ooze that factory freshness, as does the paint work.
From the main entrance, one walks through the tiled forecourt, which also doubles as parking, into the reception area, beyond which is the mini Resto-Bar, which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
For those that prefer the outdoors, there is a petite garden that can accommodate a crowd of about 60, and that is popular with ceremonies like banquets and weddings.
Beyond the bar is a small conference facility that sits about 25, and further beyond is the kitchen.

Akagera National Park, New infrastuctures, New products, New vision
Video directed in January 2013
19/09/2013
Akagera National Park is Rwanda's largest national park and one of the most diverse and scenically-attractive savannah reserves in Africa. Akagera has had a colourful history. Gazetted in 1934, it was among the first National Parks in Africa. At the time the park covered an area of over 2,700 km², amounting to nearly 10% of the total surface area of Rwanda. In 1997, 3 years after the genocide, the park was significantly reduced to its current size of 1,120 km², surrendering large areas on the western boundary to free up much-needed farming and grazing land for the returning refugees from Uganda and Tanzania.
From a wildlife management point of view the park lost much of its best grazing land; however, what remained as Akagera National Park retains the most stunning landscapes, with rolling views across the hills to the swamps and lakes that make up the largest protected wetland in Central Africa. With the many initiatives aimed at improve the level of service delivery in the public and private sectors in place, a lot have been said and done. But most times, when we examine the level of the service we still receive, we wonder if we are doing things right. So, are the sensitisation campaigns, trainings and publications yielding any positive results?Well, let me share what I recently experienced in the ‘middle of a tea plantation’ and you be the judge. Gorillas in the Mist : 25 Things You Didn't Know about the film
03/10/2013
Gorillas in the Mist is a 1988 American drama film directed by Michael Apted and starring Sigourney Weaver as naturalist Dian Fossey. It tells the true-life story of her work in Rwanda with Mountain Gorillas and was nominated for five Academy Awards.
By Gary Susman
But as familiar as Fossey's story is (thanks to the movie), there's still much that remains shrouded in mystery, from the identity of Fossey's killer to how Sigourney Weaver was able to ingratiate herself with Fossey's own gorillas during the filming. Here's the details behind the film, including the hardships involved in making it, which gorillas were fake, and what became of the poacher-threatened primates after the movie crew left.
1. Producer Arne Glimcher and Universal had acquired the movie rights to "Gorillas in the Mist," Fossey's 1983 best-selling memoir. Glimcher traveled to Rwanda in 1985 to meet her and discuss ideas for the movie. Hours before their schedul...
